Back when we started IRON & STONE in 2012, we never even dreamed of doing a full-length album. We never thought about going further than the songs for the initial EP. With ‘Petrichor’ we surpassed all expectations we had of the project back then... and there is even more to come.”(Stephan, IRON & STONE). Indeed, “Petrichor” is a huge step forward for the Hannover-based five-piece in more than one way: It’s the first full-length album by the band, it’s the first IRON & STONE re-lease via Backbite Records, a dedicated underground label based in Karlsruhe, Germa-ny, and “Petrichor” is the first set of songs that were written by a proper band line-up, and not in the two-man mode of the previous EPs. Originally founded as a recording project back in 2012, IRON & STONE switched to a full band line-up in 2014 in order to play live gigs and immediately started to work on new material, with every band mem-ber putting their ideas on the table.
“Petrichor” shows a multitude of influences during the writing process: From the rather psychedelic opening of “Avalanche”, rock-driven songs live “Vortex” and “Northern Lights” to the angry, Southern Rock drenched groove of “Monolith”, the Desert Rock of “Caves” or the classic Doom of “Petrichor” there are a lot of facets of IRON & STONE’s sound coming to life –all the while sticking to the “tune low, play slow”-paradigm the band was founded on. When it comes to lyrics, IRON & STONE stray away from the usual Doom aesthetic of mountains and wizards. Henning has a critical view on the powers of today’s world and the current Zeitgeist, and even though IRON & STONE are not a political band, there is a certain subtext to the words without the songs becoming preachy.
Production-wise the band kept their traditional DIY-approach: recoding in a couple of rehearsal rooms of friends, doing the mixing in Stephan’s home studio and having the mastering done by longtime friend of the band and unofficial sixth member Andi Brunke (Lights Of Utopia, Excrementory Grindfuckers).
